Heatwave Safety Tips - How to Protect Your Dog This Summer

Summertime is exciting for everyone; the days are warmer and longer, meaning your pup can stay outside longer than they previously could; and you can bring them to more festivals and events. However, extreme heat can be harmful to your dogs health and safety. Here are three tips to protect your dogs in hot weather this summer:

Tip #1 - 5 Second Rule for Hot Weather

In hot weather, dogs paws' need more attention. You may have heard of the “5 second rule” for walks on hot days. Essentially, if you plan to take your dog for a walk on pavement, you should test the temperature first to ensure that you don’t burn your dog’s paws. Lay the back of your hand down on the pavement. If you can't withstand the heat for more than 5 seconds, your dog can't either.

Tip #2 - Avoid Peak Sun Hours

Peak sun hours usually occur starting from noon till early afternoon when the sun is at its highest position. Keep pets indoors or under good shade cover during these hours. However, don’t keep your pet completely indoors for fear of sun damage. Plan your activities wisely to avoid extensive exposure to full sun during peak hours.

Tip #3 - Stay Hydrated

Did you know that during summer, dogs need 3 to 4 times the normal amount of water than usual? A general rule of thumb is that your dog needs 1 ounce of water for each pound of their body weight per day. Amp that up on days where they are more active or where the temperatures are rising to make sure they’re getting what they need.
