The dog mayor election is held every two years, and most candidates have a public profile or are well-known in the community. Stephen Calabria, an East Harlem resident, founded the Dog Mayor election to raise awareness about voter registration and pet adoption. He is in charge of handpicking the candidates based on their social media status and involvement within the community boroughs.
Voting is done completely online in a March Madness-style bracket. Voting began July 24 and will continue through the fall. The final two candidates will go head-to-head on November 4 to determine who is the next NYC mayor.
