Keep Your Dog's Paws Safe on Hot Pavements with These 4 Tips

Worried about your dog's paws staying cool this summer? Fear not!

It takes more planning, but long summer strolls and adventures outdoors are still possible even on the hottest of days this summer. Let’s find out how you can keep your dog’s paws safe while still enjoying outings together in the warm months.

Support Healthy Paws & Happy Dogs

Summer is filled with warm, outdoor activities, and ensuring your dog is safe and comfortable is critical. Keep in mind that if you can’t rest your hand comfortably on the pavement for ten seconds, your dog’s paws can easily burn if they’re exposed to this level of heat.

Here’s how you can keep your dog happy and comfortable on long strolls in the summer sunshine.

Walk When It’s Cool

Hit the pavement early in the day or at night so your dog can still get the exercise he needs without the risk of burning his paws on the pavement from the afternoon sunshine. Cooler temperatures and less sun equal manageable pavement or blacktop, so head out early and beat the heat!

Walk on the Grass

Find new walking paths that are mainly grass or trails that have grassy spots where your dog can cool his paws as needed.

Wear Dog Shoes

If all else fails, dog shoes work wonders for hot summer days when your dog needs to get outside and burn off some energy.

Moisturize the Paws

Prevent irritation from hot pavement by moisturizing your dog's paws regularly. Try a paw balm or coconut oil that is easily absorbed by the paw pads. These non-toxic products will help prevent cuts, cracks, and peeling of the paws so your dog can continue enjoying his summertime strolls.

How to Treat Sore Paws

If dog paws on hot pavement are inevitable, here’s how you can treat your dog’s sore or tender paws.

Try to submerge the overheated paws in cold water for at least ten minutes. If your dog won’t sit still, wrap a cool cloth around his tender paws to soothe any burning or irritation. Try to prevent your dog from licking his irritated paws, as this can exacerbate the soreness and irritation.

If his paws are visibly damaged, be sure to contact your veterinarian right away.
